Her cycling dream was sparked by the Tour de France victory of her local hero Geraint Thomas. Awen Roberts aims to take on cycling's biggest race by herself in the future. Today, she works every day to reach the highest level. The Welsh rider is already part of the development program of Canyon//SRAM-Zondacrypto, one of the biggest teams in the peloton. The 21-year-old rider has shown real promise in hilly stages, and would like to show even more this season. You did well on hilly terrain so far. Are you targeting a strong GC in the Tour de Feminin, this week?

Yes, the stages look hard and tough but looking forward to see what we can achieve as a team. I think we can do well here as we have a strong team and I’m very motivated for it :)

How are you looking back at your season so far?

Some races have been good and others not so good but progress has been made and I’m excited for Feminin.

You're riding for the development team of Canyon//SRAM Zondacrypto. Was it special for you to ride for the first team sometimes?

Yes, really special. The first race I did with the World Tour team was in Thuringen in 2024. I learnt a lot from the experience riding with some of the best girls in the world.

⁠You were born in Wales. Are riders like Zoe Backstedt or Geraint Thomas an inspiration for you?

Growing up I was inspired by Geraint Thomas especially after his win in the 2018 Tour de France. I’ve been lucky to race against and with Zoe from an early age and try to follow the standard she set.

⁠What are your ambitions in your career?

I’d love to be a full time professional cyclist and to compete in the best races in the World.

⁠What are your goals for this season?

To enjoy all the races, try and achieve podiums and represent my team the best I can. Also, to be selected with GB for international races.

How did you get into cycling?

I’ve got 3 older brothers who were cyclist and I used to go with them down the local club Towy Riders. Then when I was old enough I started cycling with them.

⁠Which race do you dream to ride one day?

The Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift because it’s the ultimate race in cycling. I would also love to compete in the Olympic and World Road Races.
